Longevity –
Ein Weg zu mehr Lebensqualität und Langlebigkeit

Longevity as a concept is becoming more important every day. Podcasts, books, and articles frequently discuss it, and terms like "biohacking" have become part of our everyday vocabulary. But what exactly lies behind the idea of longevity?

The term itself comes from Latin, where longus means "long" and vita stands for "life." In the United States, this topic sparked a movement that has also taken hold in Europe in recent years. However, the core of this concept isn’t simply living a long life, but rather how those extra years can be lived healthily and meaningfully.

Life Span vs. Health Span

Thanks to advances in medicine, biology, and technology, life expectancy continues to increase. But what about quality of life? During youth and middle age, the body and mind generally remain fit, but later in life, a gradual decline often begins. Diseases such as cardiovascular issues, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and type 2 diabetes affect many people, sometimes for years.

This is the central challenge: while modern medicine (often called Medicine 2.0) can postpone death, it is less effective at extending the health span.

Health span refers to the period of life during which a person is healthy and capable—free from chronic disease, physical limitations, or the need for care. Research shows that, on average, there is a nine-year gap between total life span and the years lived in good health. In other words, many people spend their final years facing illness and limitations.

This is where Medicine 3.0 comes into play. Its focus is on prevention and proactive health management. Through precise diagnostics, personalized approaches, and healthy habits, individuals can take an active role in their health. It’s not just about living longer, but about living better.

Prevention as the Key to Longevity

Research shows that only about 20% of our health is genetically determined. The much larger portion—around 80%—depends on attitudes, behaviors, and environmental factors. This means that regardless of age, it’s always possible to positively impact your well-being.

Even small changes in daily life can have significant long-term effects: a walk in fresh air, mindful eating, sufficient sleep, and regular relaxation breaks all contribute to better health. The best time to start is always now.
